Description
"Born in 1884 into a mining family in a town called Salt Lick, Pennsylvania, Wyndham Mortimer at the age of twelve was working in the mines, putting in hours that allowed him to see light only on Sundays, and first earning 7 cents an hour. When poor health forced the family to leave the mines, they traveled to Ohio where Mortimer became a steelworker. It was there that he first heard Eugene Debs speak, spurring him to work actively for the union movement. From that point forward he was a lifelong organizer, going on to become one of the founders of the UAW, and the central figure in planning, organizing, and directing the famous GM sitdown strike of 1936-37. *Organize!* is his personal account of those turbulent days of mass industrial organization.
