Description
Most work in our society is just toil. The purpose of work other than to gain a wage is unclear. The rhetoric of our society celebrates 'political democracy and economic opportunity for all,' yet democracy stops at the door of the workplace. This book is a collection of experiences written by workers, or based on interviews with them, about what they do and feel daily and what they think needs to be done to change their condition and that of other working people. This book has been edited by Walter Johnson, who has been working since he was 17 and who worked for seven years on the assembly line at General Motors. This revised edition has a new preface, introduction, and concluding essay, bringing the book's conclusions up to date.
