Description
Adivasi communities in India are feeling more and more alienated everyday from their life and from their own culture in their own land. They are caught up between today’s corporate globalisation and communalism. This film is on how one tribal community of eastern India (South Orissa), mainly Kandha, is up against this dual onslaught. Anti-Christian communal violence started in tribal dominated district of Kandhamal just after the killing of rightwing leader Swamy Laxmananda. Government of Orissa admits: 38 dead, 3 missing, 415 villages affected, 3,226 houses destroyed, 195 church and prayer houses damaged, 25,122 people were in Govt -run relief camps. Nobody knows how many thousands fled to other districts of Orissa and other parts of India. But how it happened in a tribal area? In Kashipur, Utkal Alumina International Limited, earlier a joint venture of four MNCs, came to the Kashipur block of Southern Orissa in 1993 to mine bauxite and to set up alumina plant. This was after India embarked on economic reforms, inviting more MNCs into the mining sector. Due to people's resistance, all big companies have left except for Aditya Birla (India), who adopted fraudulent means and is determined to proceed. And how it succeeds? Are adivasis being turned into sacrificial goats by the corporate globalisation due to lack of development? Are adivasis being turned into the same by Hindutwa forces because of the confusion created much earlier within themselves? This film explores the conflict within and outside of the community in context of both communalism and globalisation.
