Description
A great book written by John Murtagh, Chief Magistrate of the City of New York, and Sara Harris, a sociologist and writer. It was published in 1957 and describes the hidden but ever-present world of prostitution in New York City during the ‘40s and ‘50s. Murtagh and Harris provide us with detailed portrayals of a few of the prostitutes and pimps living there. Their background, relationships and attitudes to life show a wide variation as do the reasons for how they ended up in their situation. The portrayals are written in an interview-like style and are very vivid. The last chapters include the history of prostitution in New York City and what it looked like up until the ‘50s.
